Darling, I love you but give me Park Avenue

In an age where social media is quickly becoming king; conferences are held via Skype; and Facebook “friends” and Twitter “followers” make an entourage; is the Big Apple still the be-all, end-all of publicity? To this native South Floridian, the answer is a resounding yes.

While talking with two successful, college-educated friends recently, the topic of what I do for a living came up. I note the fact that these individuals are college-educated to emphasize my point that even society’s most valued professionals (an attorney and financial analyst, in this case), have very clear preconceived notions of the world of public relations (thanks, I’m sure to over-the-top reality TV characters). The attorney noted that although spin-doctors come in all shapes and sizes (though they typically should be relatively slender, because as much as I hate to admit it, esthetically pleasing visages don’t hurt in this business) they hold court in three distinctive kingdoms – Los Angeles, New York and my hometown, Miami. What’s more interesting to note, is that the financial analyst stated he would most likely hire the publicity studio based out of New York. Why? “Because New Yorkers are just better.”

Although the online world has changed the rules of the game, the players are still the same.

Luckily for me, Diamond Public Relations is not a Miami firm. We’re a firm that just so happens to be based in Miami. Did you notice that subtle difference? Miami firms tend to have many things in common – high employee/client turnover and daily events celebrating the opening of the hottest new Asian – Peruvian fusion bistro. As a firm with a large client base in the Caribbean, it behooves us to be based in Miami, with a presence in Los Angeles and New York.

So although New York is and will always be the capital of the world, this Miamian, will have to settle for a workman’s visa.
