Oops… I tweeted

To our fabulous clients and prospectives….we feel your pain. You’ve been urged to jump on the social media bandwagon and have Facebook down to a science, but now, it’s time to tweet. We’ve stressed the importance of having a voice on Twitter, yet you really just don’t want to do it. Too time consuming and does anyone really care what you have to say anyway? The answer is yes! If done right your Twitter feed can be cheeky, fun and a cool way of engaging everyone from the media to those you really want to know….your consumer. Let’s start slow….
Here are the Diamond PR Rules of Twitter. (It’s just a few.)
1. DO IT YOURSELF. It’s not that as your PR firm we’re being lazy. Truth be told, if we did it for you, at least it would get done. Consistently. But, that is not the point of Twitter. (We’ll take about authenticity later.) If you’re being “followed” it’s because someone wants to hear what YOU have to say. Not what we have to say. We have our own Twitter feed for that. The Social CMO agrees.
2. IT’S JUST LIKE BEING AT A PARTY. You’re overthinking your tweets. So many clients are overwhelmed and concerned about what to say in the feed. Here’s our analogy, pretend you’re at a party. If you go to a party and only talk about yourself no one will want to talk to you anymore and will avoid you like the plague. Instead, talk about other people (positively please), share stories others have related (retweeting), talk about what is going on in the world (share links) AND when you have something really interesting to say, by all means, say it. That simple.
3. USE TOOLS. There are all kinds of fabulous little applications like TweetDeck (my personal favorite), TweetBeep, Twitter Lists, TwitPics and Tweet Later that make Twitter easier and more effective. But don’t worry about all of those now, just get started.
That’s it. See, easy breezy. We’ll do advanced Twitter later. Sporty D will spearhead that conversation. Still confused? Just get started. It’s kind of like sex, you don’t really understand it until you do it yourself.
