Smooth Seas Don’t Make Good Sailors

Six months into my first PR job, I was having one of those “days.” Everything was a challenge. By mid afternoon this resulted in a total meltdown over a media tip sheet stuck in a fax machine. (Yes, I come from the days when releases/tip sheets were sent via fax and mail!) My boss walked in, handed me one of those rough bathroom paper towels and with no emotion or sympathy stated, “Honey, smooth seas don’t make good sailors.”
Imagine my shock, when earlier this month, I heard myself regurgitating those words (minus the “Honey” part) to a client. We were discussing 2009, its challenges and how it forced change and reminded us of the need to adapt and out it came, “Well, they say smooth seas don’t make good sailors.”
But wait, it’s true. January went out of its way to prove this. It was chock full of planning / strategy meetings and conference calls with clients and there is a new pattern, not emerging, it’s here. New mindsets. New ways of doing things or at least being open to new ways of doing things. Clients considering things, they wouldn’t have considered in the past. An understanding that, excuse the cliché, we are in fact navigating new waters. We have been for a while, but now everyone is finally on board. So 2009 had to go down the way it did for us to get here. It slapped us all hard in the face and woke some of us up. Can I get a Halleluiah! How about an Amen!
Looks like 2010 is the year of Captains.
